Program Details

A. Eligibility 

  • Tenure-track and tenured faculty at Texas State University 
  • PI must demonstrate either that (a) the new line of inquiry is substantively different than the old line of inquiry or (b) an existing or recent externally funded project was canceled or paused due to changes in federal research funding priorities. 
  • Research must align with a specific federal funding opportunity. 

B. Proposal Requirements 

  • Prior to submitting a proposal, applicants are strongly encouraged to meet with the Office of Research Development to assist in proposal development. Reach out to the Research Development team at researchdev@txstate.edu to schedule a meeting.
  • Applicants will complete an online form and attach a short proposal. Details and form below. 

C. Award Information 

  • Duration: Up to 12 months 
  • One year after award, recipients must submit:
    • A one-page report detailing the accomplishments and challenges
    • Confirmation of a proposal for funding submitted to a federal sponsor  

D. Submission Process 

  • Schedule a meeting with the Office of Research Development to assist in proposal development (researchdev@txstate.edu) and targeting a particular federal sponsor and program. 
  • Submit complete proposals via the Division of Research internal funding portal. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and decisions will be made within 30 days of submission.

Pivot Eligibility *

Please upload ONE PDF FILE with the following sections: 

1. Project Pivot Description (300-word max)

  • Either (a) the topic of the former line of inquiry versus the topic of the new line of inquiry and the substantive differences between the two or (b) the title of the terminated or stopped grant, the name of the federal sponsor, and the stop/termination date 
  • Compelling explanation of how the proposed pivot project aligns with new or emerging federal research priorities (e.g., AI, critical infrastructure, national security, etc.) 
  • Identification of at least one specific external funding opportunity (sponsor, funding mechanism, etc.) that the pivot project is targeting 

2. Work Plan and Timeline (200-word max) 

Key milestones from award through the anticipated external submission, including a timeline for deliverables 

3. Budget and Justification (200-word max) 

  • Allowable expenses: research supplies, services, equipment, data collection, student research assistance, or travel directly tied to research aims 
  • Unallowable expenses: faculty salary support or workload adjustments 
  • There is no set budget cap. Budget must reflect a thoughtful, compelling project that can be completed in no more than 12 months and lead to a grant proposal. 

4. Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae of PI (1 page max, focus on research funding and products)

5. Letter of Support from Department Chair or Center Director (optional but strongly encouraged)
